The voice you use with yourself matters, especially on days that do not go to plan.

Hear the inner commentary

After a mistake, notice the first sentence that appears in your mind. Is it specific and useful, or does it turn one event into a judgment about who you are? You can acknowledge what happened without reducing yourself to it.

Try a fairer sentence

Replace “I always get this wrong” with something more accurate: “This was hard, and I can decide what to try next.” Kindness is not pretending everything is fine. It is giving yourself enough steadiness to respond thoughtfully.

Bring others into the picture

The WHO stress guide includes being kind to yourself as a practical skill. If self-criticism feels constant or overwhelming, consider sharing it with someone you trust or a qualified professional. You deserve support while learning a different way to speak to yourself.
